María & Connor

Nos conocimos por una razón bastante práctica: Connor quería aprender español y María quería aprender inglés. Nos escribimos el primer día para practicar. Al tercero ya no estábamos practicando nada.

La primera vez que nos vimos en persona fue en Barranquilla. Los dos llegamos nerviosos y se nos pasó en diez minutos. De ahí seguimos a Cartagena, a Medellín, a Bogotá. En ese viaje descubrimos dos cosas: que viajando juntos nos entendemos sin hablar, y que pensábamos igual sobre la fe, la familia y la vida que queríamos.

A Buenos Aires llegamos por Connor. Le faltaba hacer un intercambio de idioma para terminar su carrera de Psicología y eligió Argentina, así que nos vinimos los dos. Después vivimos unos meses en Medellín, y hubo una temporada en que Connor volvió solo a Estados Unidos a trabajar y ahorrar. Fueron meses de llamadas a deshora y de tachar días en el calendario.

Volvimos a Buenos Aires y acá nos quedamos. Hace más de un año y medio que esta es nuestra casa, aunque la usamos sobre todo como punto de partida. Colonia del Sacramento cruzando el río, el eje cafetero, Mendoza, Bariloche, las Cataratas del Iguazú de los dos lados, el argentino y el brasileño. Nos gusta llegar a un lugar sin saber bien qué vamos a hacer.

De todos esos viajes, el que nos cambió fue Ushuaia. Connor eligió lo más al sur que se puede llegar para hacer la pregunta. No había nadie alrededor: solo nosotros dos y el atardecer de fondo. Hacía frío y había viento, y María dijo que sí. Ahora solo falta hacerlo delante de ustedes.

We met for a fairly practical reason: Connor wanted to learn Spanish, and María wanted to learn English. We wrote to each other on the first day to practice. By the third day, we weren’t practicing anything.

The first time we met in person was in Barranquilla. We both turned up nervous but it wore off in about ten minutes. From there we carried on to Cartagena, Medellín, and Bogotá. On that trip we found out two things: that traveling together we understand each other without talking, and that we thought the same way about faith, family, and the life we wanted.

Buenos Aires happened because of Connor. He still needed a language exchange to finish his degree in Psychology, and he picked Argentina, so the two of us moved down together. After that we spent a few months in Medellín, and there was a stretch when Connor went back to the States on his own to work and save. Those were months of calls at odd hours and crossing days off the calendar.

We came back to Buenos Aires and stayed. It has been home for more than a year and a half, though we mostly use it as a starting point. Colonia del Sacramento across the river, the Colombian coffee region, Mendoza, Bariloche, the Iguazú Falls from both sides, Argentine and Brazilian. We like arriving somewhere without quite knowing what we will do.

Of all those trips, the one that changed things was Ushuaia. Connor picked the furthest south you can go to ask the question. There was no one else around: just the two of us and the sunset behind us. It was cold and it was windy, and María said yes. All that is left is doing it in front of you.
